What is Hawking Radiation?




Hawking radiation is radiation emitted from the blackholes ,due to QM effects at the event horizon . it was predicted by Stephan hawking and from him it got its name. 




But wait first what is a blackhole? And what is an event horizon? According to general theory of relativity : When a star dies , due to gravitational forces the mass starts to compact And can deform spacetime to form a black hole.Where event horizon is the region of no return , such that nothing can escape even light. 

But in 1972 Jacob Bekenstein suggests that black holes must have entropy and he finds out that the information of anything that falls into the blackhole is proportional to the area of blackhole(entropy is the measure of hidden information). Then , Stephan hawking coupled quantum field with the idea of classical blackhole that of GR and showed that blackholes really have entropy and temperature in which they emit blackbody radiation known as hawking radiation. The radiation doesn't come from the blackhole itself, but from the creation of particle-anti particle couple (vacuum fluctuations) just beyond event horizon , such that one of the particles escape and lowers the mass of the blackhole. This creation is boosted by blackhole's gravitational energy.
